The Knot

18 – 24 June

About

A week of fearless conversations about the future of independent theatre.

One year since theatres reopened, independent artists face many daunting questions – some seemingly unanswerable.

This summer, we're setting a bold agenda for what's next: a programme of big-thinking panel discussions, game-changing workshops and mind-expanding speakers – plus theatre’s spiciest pub quiz.

Hosted at NDT Broadgate, available in person or online, all completely free.

No elephants in the room or on the zoom. Dive in with us.

The Knot is a partnership between New Diorama Theatre, Bunny, Uproot and Culture Mile. All kindly supported by National Lottery funding awarded by Arts Council England.

Headline panels include:

Social Media Activism – the future of institutional accountability?
Including the Royal Court's Vicky Featherstone and artist-campaigner Adam Lenson, Barbican chair Tom Slade, chaired by playwright Vinay Patel.

Censorship: Alive and Well in the UK?
ThisEgg’s Josie Dale Jones joins to discuss censorship and reactionary responses following The Family Sex Show.

Black Art, White Gaze: Why is my truth considered a 'trauma story'?
London’s hottest playwright Ryan Calais Cameron (For Black Boys) features in a panel about Black-led work targeting commercial success amidst a white critical and audience gaze.

Available in person and via zoom.

The stuff they don’t teach on the average artist development course and the skills artists need right now, from
How To Fire People Well (And Other Interpersonal Skills) to managing Creative Mental Health, and Financial Planning for Freelancers.

Co-presented with Culture Mile, available in person and live streaming.

A speaker programme provokes artists’ curiosity with expert insights from the wider world – big questions that have nothing to do with art, but everything to do with the world in which art is made.

Headline speakers include Venture Capitalist Fabio La Franca on Getting Metaverse-Ready – terrifying, mind-blowing, future-shaping technologies - and UN climate change negotiator Brianna Craft.

Get your team together, let your hair down, and join us for some fun. All in the spirit of merriment and mischief, as we spend the last of our CRF on free drinks for everyone. (Just don’t tell Nadine).
